The cathedral setting is widely considered the most elegant and classic settings, especially for engagement rings. Cathedral settings use arches of metal to hole the stone in place. These arches are similar to the arches of a cathedral, hence the name “cathedral setting”. One of the most defining characteristics of the cathedral setting is how high the stone is mounted above the band.
The arches of the setting add extra height to the ring, making the center stone look larger. It also adds style without having to add any other stones, which saves money.
The cathedral setting is more prone to snagging than other settings because of how high the stone is mounted, so it’s not suggested for those with active lifestyles.
