Peridot has always ben associated with light. Egyptians even called it the “gem of the sun”.

Peridot was first mined off an island near Egypt. It was often confused with other gemstones such as emerald or topaz. Historians believe that Cleopatra’s famous collection of emeralds were actually peridot.

The confusion between peridot and emeralds continued through Medieval times as well. For centuries, people believed that the gems that covered the Three Holy Kings in Germany’s Cologne Cathedral were emeralds. They are, in fact, peridot.
