According to legend, iolite is a viking compass stone. The stone served as a glare-reducer and polarizing filter to help locate the sun on cloudy days to be able to navigate on the ocean.

The name iolite comes from the Greek word for “violet”. For centuries, it was incorrectly referred to as a “water sapphire”.
