Baseball originated even before the Civil War as a game called rounders that was played in empty lots and was a variation of the English game cricket. Record-keeping really set baseball apart from cricket in the US, and it’s hard to imagine baseball without the excitement of records being set and broken.

In 1845, Alexander Cartwright created a formal list of rules for baseball and a year later, the first recorded baseball contest took place. A decade later, the small amateur teams came together and formed the National Association Of Baseball Players. These games followed a standard set of rules and charged fans a fee to watch the game. By the beginning of the 20th century, most large cities in the eastern United States has their own baseball team. Baseball really came of age in the 1920s when Babe Ruth helped the New York Yankees with several World Series and became a national hero.

In the late 1800s and the first half of the 1900s was filled with baseball leagues battling each other for players, teams, and profits. In 1947, the first African American player, Jackie robinson, joined the league amongst a lot of controversy, which made the fighting even worse. In the 1950s, baseball began expanding to western cities. By the 1960s, the Major League Baseball Players Association had won the battle of the leagues, After the leagues were done fighting each other, the MLB began fighting with the players. The players were fighting for more money and more rights in their contracts. This resulted in mass player-trading, up and downs in salaries, and a lit of public fighting.

In 1981, players walked out in the middle of the season to protest the fact that the team owners didn’t want the players to be free agents. In 1985, the players struck again, this time striking against the team owners who wanted to reduce salaries. Finally, the World Series was cancelled for the first time in 92 years in 1994 when the players were forced to play without contracts.

Since then, the labor deals have been reached for both players and team owners, and fans can one again enjoy baseball without having to witness uncomfortable tension on the field, strikes, or walk-outs. While baseball has fallen behind other sports in terms of popularity, it is still an important part of American culture.

Abroad, baseball was introduced to Japan in the 1870s by an American professor teaching at a Japanese university. Baseball was only played at the university level until the 1930s, when Japan began creating its own professional baseball league. In the 1990s, a Japanese player became the all-star pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Baseball was also introduced to Cuba and the Caribbean islands. In 1996, a battle for Olympic gold in baseball ultimately came down to a game between Japan and Cuba, with Cuba winning gold.
